8 Essential Steps to Maintain a Healthy Skin

Updated: May 8

When it comes to skincare products, it is always best to know your skin type before purchasing one and whichever your skin type is, it is ideal to have a full skincare routine.

You will get the best results in skincare by using natural products. Trust me, it is the best way to go. There are a lot of reasons to go green, organic, and natural in your routine.

A lot of products out there are full of chemical ingredients masked by natural ones. They do very little to achieve the results you want! Did you know your skin is the largest organ? Yes! So, whatever you put on it will be absorbed into your bloodstream that's why it is extremely important to apply and use natural products that will nourish it from within and maintain overall skin health while improving skin issues such as hyperpigmentation, acne, and scarring.

I will let you in on the external and internal ways on how to maintain healthy skin by doing the basic skincare routine.

1. Cleanse

The cleanser removes deep-seated dirt and impurities on your skin. Make sure to cleanse your face at least once a day. Ideal cleansing is once when you wake up and once before sleeping. DON'T OVERDO IT. Choose a cleanser that doesn't leave your skin tight or squeaky-clean feeling, it is rubbed off its natural oils and you don't want that. Choose a mild cleanser that is formulated for dry skin, like a foam cleanser or micellar cleanser.

2. Moisturize

Moisturizing is an essential part of your skincare routine. It reduces dryness, chapping and keeps your skin healthy as it locks in moisture under your make-up or other skincare steps. Do this twice a day. Pro Tip! Apply moisturizer on damp skin. It helps seal the moisture into the skin. Choose a moisturizer that nourishes your skin with natural ingredients.

3. Exfoliate

Exfoliating is the key to soft, smooth, and radiant skin! But, don't do it too often as dark skin can be sensitive to exfoliants and different skin types require different care. The trick is to focus on the rough dry patches of your skin; don’t be heavy-handed a little goes a long way! It is best to opt for a gentle and nourishing exfoliant that leaves skin feeling soft and smooth while rubbing off dead skin cells. Regular exfoliation will leave your skin healthy, smooth, soft, and radiant.

4. Use Sunscreen

It is a common misconception that melanin-rich skin does not need sunscreen and could not get burned by sun waves. FALSE! You need to wear sunscreen no matter your skin color. Exposure to the sun leads to discoloration, freckles, premature aging, sunburnt, etc., SPF is a must. Apply sunscreen which is at least 30 SPF, 15 minutes before going outdoors. It is an everyday product that you need to apply rain or shine. If you're swimming or frequent under the sun, reapply the product every few hours to achieve full protection.

5. Treat Acne, Dark spots, Pimple Scars

With a dark skin tone, you are more prone to skin discolorations such as hyperpigmentation, dark spots, and scarring. It happens when the skin is triggered to produce more melanin. The good news is, it doesn't have to be permanent. For people of color looking to speed up the process of lightening dark spots, the American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends looking for products formulated with an ingredient like glycolic acid and aloe. Apply the product in the morning and at night after cleansing. It will help smoothen and refine skin while fading the look of dark spots with continued use over time.

6. Drink lots of water

Drinking lots of water on a daily basis goes a long way and proves to have lots of benefits for your overall health. Water flushes away unwanted dirt and toxins from your body and keeps you hydrated. Lack of body hydration is the common cause of dry skin. The National Health Service (NHS) advises drinking 8-12 glasses of water on a daily basis. Adding a slice of lemon or cucumber will help overall and over time, you can see visible differences in your skin glow.

7. Get Enough Sleep

Having enough sleep will benefit you not just physically but also mentally. It regenerates skin cells and promotes healthier overall well-being. Sleep is rest. It is only wise to get sleep to reset and recharge your body for the next day, but it also works to renew your skin. It can boost your immune system and steers you away from illnesses. Make sure to get enough sleep every day!

8. Eat Healthily

Working on your skin also needs internal work. This is why a healthy balanced diet is a must! It is necessary for glowing skin along with getting enough water to hydrate. Add raw vegetables, fruits, lean proteins, and whole grains to your diet. Daily exercise will increase your metabolism and remove toxins from the body. Try to squeeze in a quick workout everyday

And there you go! The 8 fundamental parts of a skincare routine. I know it's not easy to keep up with the routing but it takes time and consistency to achieve the result! The sooner you start, the better.
